A motorist in his late 60s who lives two blocks from the crossing for the Edward H. Bryan School told police he didn’t see Ned Visich as he drove east on Grant Avenue to the intersection of Brookside Avenue.
Visich, who was wearing his bright yellow reflective vest, got knocked onto the hood and windshield of the white Sebring convertible, Cresskill Police Chief Edward Wrixon said.
An officer checking school crossings rolled up almost instantly and immediately summoned emergency medical techs, who rushed Visich to the hospital, Wrixon told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Doctors treated him for a blow to the head, the chief said. Visich also complained of leg and chest pains.
Wrixon said the direct sunlight could have blinded the driver, although the department’s Traffic Division was still investigating the 8:15 a.m. crash this afternoon. He was pretty shaken up after hitting Visich, the chief said.
“It’s very upsetting to anybody,” Wrixson said. “The man lives right up the road, two blocks away. He passes him all the time.”
Visich, of Dumont, “is a really nice guy — a tough guy, too, in pretty good shape,” the chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “He’s one of the ones you like to have out there. He’s sharp. “
Police aren’t sure whether any children were around when the accident happened, he said.
