Police stopped the car Monday shortly after it left the Hackensack Avenue lot, Capt. Brian Corcoran said.

Its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) had been altered in several areas "in a futile attempt to obscure the fact that it was stolen," Corcoran said.

Sgt. Anthony Di Persia and Officer Victor Vazquez located the correct VIN, confirmed that the car was stolen out of Palisades Park and arrested the driver, 53-year-old Robert B. Callahan of Newark.

Callahan posted $25,000 bail and was released pending a hearing on charges of receiving stolen property and altering a VIN.
