UC man struck while checking on disabled car on Route 3 Berry’s Creek bridge in East Rutherford

UPDATE: A 62-year-old Union City man remained in critical condition this morning after he got out to check on his disabled sedan and was injured after another car slammed into his on the Berry’s Creek Bridge on Route 3 in East Rutherford late last night.

The driver got out of his 1992 LIncoln Town Car in the second lane from the left of the eastbound bridge and was looking under the hood when it was struck by a 2001 Honda Accord shortly after 11:40 p.m., Lt. Bill Lorenc told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

The impact knocked him onto the windshield of his own sedan, the lieutenant said.

He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he remained in intensive care this morning.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit was at the scene, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which collected evidence.

No charges were filed or summonses immediately issued, Lorenc said. The investigation was continuing.
