The Bergen County chapter of the NAACP said it hopes the event provides the forum to address several issues, including the verdict, at a vigil on the steps of the county courthouse.
“We are asking parents to bring their children, friends and those who believe the legacy of Trayvon must not die,” the group said in an announcement.
Although the overall goal nationwide is to get the U.S. Justice Department to bring a civil rights suit against Zimmerman, the Bergen group wants to also discuss the Voting Rights Act, Stand Your Ground laws and racial profiling, among other topics, its president told nj.com.
“Let’s get to the polls — that’s my driving pitch right now,” Bergen NAACP President Anthony Cureton said. ” We have to get folks to the voting box so we can be heard, and that’s everybody — black, white, yellow, purple or brown.”
