Train station commuter who lost wallet wasn’t what he seemed, Port Authority police say

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: The man in the business suit at the Hoboken PATH station last night seemed in serious trouble, as he shouted into a cellphone that he lost his wallet and needed money. One commuter gave him $14.

Two days earlier the same man pulled the same stunt, said another commuter — who took his picture.

Stephen Aprilante, a self-employed, 35-year-old computer repairman, was arrested and charged with theft by deception after Port Authority officers in plain clothes heard him last night, the agency’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

Aprilante, of Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn, “admitted performing this scam regularly,” Pentangelo said.

Records indicate that he has “an extensive criminal history,” he said.
