Aris Maria, 24, had been brought in from Tenafly on charges of possession and manufacturing drugs, said Richard Moriarity, a spokesman for Sheriff Michael Saudino.
Officers had already determined the suspect was under the influence of some type of drug when he “went into a medical situation” around 5:30 a.m. and a nurse on staff began doing chest compressions, Moriarity said.
He was then was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Moriarity said he couldn’t comment on anything else. That includes information from a source with knowledge of the incident who told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that the suspect was carrying concealed drugs that may or may not have contributed to his death.
The man’s family has been notified and investigators are carefully reviewing all of the details.
