Quick-moving emergency workers apparently made the difference.

Residents of a single-family home on Overlook Road were trying to remove the tree, which was leaning against the front of the house, when it fell and hit the victim on the lawn Monday afternoon.

The victim’s father was driving a pickup truck with a rope attached to the tree while he, his brother and a friend were cutting the base with a chain saw, a source with direct knowledge of the accident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The tree fell, hitting the victim in the mid-section.

Emergency responders found him extremely pale, likely because of a loss of blood from his internal injuries, and heavily bruised around his pelvis, the source said.

Although he was covered in debris, he wasn’t pinned — and he was conscious, Police Chief Jerry Beckman said.

EMS personnel put him on an long board and into a Closter ambulance, which headed to the Hackensack University Medical Center Trauma Center.

But his condition worsened on the way, so police provided an escort. Englewood ALS met the ambulance en route to the hospital.

Along with police, Closter Ambulance and the paramedics, Alpine firefighters and DPW workers responded to deal with the tree.
