The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs has filed the suit in Hackensack against J&L Glass & Construction Corp. and Its All Glass Corp., both in Saddle Brook, and Glass Dynamix Corp. of Englewood, as well as their principals, Joel R. Tobia and Evelyn Perez.

The businesses, among other things, “incorrectly installed replacement shower doors and glass, causing damage while doing so, and failed to deliver glass table tops ordered by consumers,” acting New Jersey Attorney General John J. Hoffman said.

“Consumers often were forced to hire other contractors to fix the allegedly shoddy work performed by these defendants, and, in some cases, as described in the complaint, repairs had to be made in order to stop water leaks from causing further damage to their homes,” Hoffman said.

The DCA is asking a judge to order that the victims be reimbursed, that the companies’ corporate charters be dissolved and that Tobia and Perez be barred from ever from owning or operating another home improvement contracting company.

In addition to doing substandard work, failing to fix it and not completing projects, the defendants also used deficient home improvement contracts that, among other things, didn’t include a notice to consumers about their right to cancel, Hoffman said. The contracts for purchase of glass table tops also failed to include delivery dates, he said.

The companies also listed business locations where they didn’t have offices, Hoffman said.

The state’s nine-count civil complaint names both Tobia, 51 and the 53-year-old Perez, as well as J&L Glass & Construction Corp., a Saddle Brook-based company also known as “J&L Mirror and Glass;” Glass Dynamix Corp., in Englewood, also known as “Dynamix”; and Its All Glass Corp., in Saddle Brook, which is also known as “All Glass Services.”

It alleges violations of the Home Improvement Contractors’ Registration Act, related regulations, and the Delivery of Household Furniture and Furnishings regulations.

“Consumers should get the home improvements and fixtures that they paid for, not suffer additional costs for damages caused by the home improvement companies themselves.”Division of Consumer Affairs Acting Director Steve Lee.

Three dozen or so consumers filed complaints with the Division of Consumer Affairs, prompting a probe by Investigator Jared O’Cone.

Deputy Attorney General Patricia Schiripo, Assistant Chief of the Consumer Fraud Prosecution Section in the Division of Law, is representing the state.
