South Hackensack PD: Route 46 DWI Driver Had Struck Sign Sticking From Roof

SOUTH HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A drunk driver who'd struck a pole in Secaucus and kept going was unaware that it was sticking out of her sun roof, said police who stopped and arrested her on Route 46 in South Hackensack.

Maria V. Vazquez, 52, of Hawthorne drove for several miles "with the NJ Transit sign impaled through the sun roof of her Lexus" early Saturday morning, Capt. Robert Kaiser said.

Officer David Polanco spotted the car on Route 46 and pulled Vasquez over, he said.

Vasquez failed a field sobriety test and was brought to headquarters, where police processed her on DWI and careless driving charges before releasing her to a responsible adult pending a court hearing, the captain said.

"Thankfully no one was in the backseat of the vehicle or this could have been a different situation," Kaiser said.
