Sleeping man at Newark Airport beaten, knocked unconscious with chair

BEYOND BERGEN: Port Authority police at Newark Airport rescued a 62-year-old man attacked by an emotionally disturbed traveler who hit him several times in the head with a chair, knocking him unconscious.

The victim had been sleeping when he was attacked for no apparent reason around 4:30 a.m. yesterday on the mezzanine level of Terminal B, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said.

The 28-year-old assailant was still beating the man when officers arrived and grabbed him, he said.

The ticketed passenger, wearing what appeared to be a hospital bracelet, was taken into custody, Pentangelo said.

The victim was taken to University Hospital.
