Singing judge, citizenship oaths, more at Bergen County Law Day

SHOUT OUT: The oath of citizenship that will be given to 34 new Americans in Hackensack on Wednesday will be accompanied by what amounts to a courthouse variety show of sorts, featuring student contest winners, recognition of the mock trial team from Torah Academy — and a singing judge.

Superior Court Judge Donald R. Venezia will deliver a rendition of “American the Beautiful” and Christian Davakis from River Dell High School will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” as part of the Law Day festivities.

New Jersey Chief Justice Stuart Rabner will give the oath of citizenship during the event, whose theme this year in a series of statewide ceremonies, is “Equality Under the Law.”

Michelle Foti, a student at Lyndhurst High School, will read her countywide Law Day-winning essay.

Winners of two contests will be recognized: Superior Court Judge Joseph S. Conte, the Law Day Committee chairman, will present awards for an “Equality Under the Law” poster contest, while Bergen County Clerk John S. Hogan will do the honors for the young winners of a “My County” poster contest.

The mock trial team from Torah Academy of Bergen County will be honored for its first- place finish in a countywide mock trial competition.

Music will also be provided by the Ridgefield Park High School Chorus under the direction of Paul Simeone.

Law Day, established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958, is dedicated to promoting understanding of the rule of law, due process and the responsibility the court has to ensure access to justice.

Former U.S. Congressman Steven R. Rothman will give the keynote address. Other speakers will include Superior Court Assignment Judge Peter E. Doyne, Bergen County Administrator Edward J. Trawinski and Bergen County Bar Association President Gerald R. Salerno.
