No serious injuries were immediately reported when the pavement in a strip mall parking lot gave way in front of Ray’s Pizza on Broadway just before 1 p.m., opening a rectangular crater roughly 15 feet long.
A Hummer parked in the garage below was slightly damaged, responders at the scene told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
No further collapse appeared likely, they said.
Emergency responders from Hillsdale, Westwood, Woodcliff Lake, Park Ridge and Hackensack were among those at the scene.
Also responding were Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) units, which have equipment for collapsed-trench, high-angle and confined-space rescues. They included the Hackensack rescue and shoring teams, Paterson’s rescue unit, the North Hudson shoring unit, Newark’s collapse team and the Jersey City rescue squad.
PSE&G was at the scene, along with fire officials.
Police detoured traffic, including school and commercial buses, while NJ Transit slowed trains on the Pascack Valley Line.
River Vale firefighters provided mutual aid.
