Sheriff nabs deadbeat dads who owe $1.6M in child support

William MacPhail of Demarest didn’t have to ask why he was being rousted by Bergen County Sheriff’s officers: He owes $112,091 in child support. Sort of makes him the king of deadbeat dads around here — above George Morcos of Rutherford, who owes $107,200; Glen Boyd of Wyckoff, $69,415; and Lawrence Barlow of Englewood, $60,753.

They were among 159 defendants who were arrested or surrendered the past week in “Operation: Clean Sweep,” an annual roundup that targets people wanted on outstanding warrants, mostly for failing to pay child support.

Together, the group owes $1.6 million. Of that, authorities were able to immediately collect nearly $190,000. Taxpayers got a benefit, as well: At $55 a pop, booking fees brought in $7,205, said Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire, who ordered the massive sweep.

“Operation: Clean Sweep appears to be the most successful round up of fugitives in the history of Bergen County,” McGuire said.

George Green of Westwood got himself off the list quick, paying his outstanding support in full: $16,633. So did Barry Beyda of Ramsey: $11,790. Boyd, meanwhile, knocked $5,000 off his debt. Fred Santaite of Hackensack ponied up $15,000 of the $24,200 that he owed.

They were among a couple dozen deadbeat dads who paid more than 10 percent of their outstanding support.

The payments kept them out of jail.

Others weren’t so fortunate. Arrangements are being made for some to spend some time behind bars while keeping, or getting, jobs under supervised release.

Then there are those like MacPhail, who didn’t pay a nickel. They’ll be cooling their heels in the lockup for awhile.

McGuire added a word for those who might end up rousted themselves: “If you presently have a warrant out for your arrest I strongly suggest you turn yourself in to the proper authorities.

“The men and women of the Sherriff’s Office don’t forgive — or forget. One way or another, we’re going to get you.”
