All seven, plus a half-dozen firefighters, had to be decontaminated at the scene by Garfield’s hazardous materials unit, Felten said.

One injured worker was immediately rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, and the rest were taken after that, he said.

The fire began in a mixer where they make newspaper ink, Felten said (U.S. Ink is a division of Sun Chemical).

“We have no idea how it started,” the chief said, adding that an investigation was under way.

A fire that broke out after the blast was doused by sprinklers, but firefighters had to took care of some flames in the duct work, he said.

Besides that damage, “there’s a lot of water in the building, obviously,” Felten said.

Heavy smoke poured from the roof vents when his crews arrived, the chief said, adding that the victims were already outside.
