Detective Kevin Scannell was monitoring radio transmissions when he heard the alert and spotted 29-year-old Donald K. Vickers of Rutherford on Paterson Avenue in East Rutherford, Police Chief John Russo said this morning.
He was carrying a knife “that was folded to replicate a credit card,” the chief said.
Moments earlier, he said, Vickers stabbed the 23-year-old victim four times with another weapon, a Smith & Wesson folding knife, in front of 154 Union Avenue near Wood Street after arguing over “past incidents.” He then fled, Russo said.
Rutherford EMTs took the victim to Hackensack University Medical Center with what the chief said were serious wounds to his stomach, chest and arm.
He was reported in stable condition this morning.
Detectives from Rutherford and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification recovered the weapon used, Russo said.
Vickers was released without bail pending a court date on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and three illegal weapons possession counts.
