Rutherford DPW worker, 69, struck by pickup on way to work

UPDATE: A 69 year-old Rutherford public works employee was struck by a pickup truck while walking to work on Route 17 South and Highland Cross in Rutherford this morning, police said.

The victim sustained multiple fractures and a head injury in the 5:30 a.m. crash and was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, Capt. Patrick Feliciano said.

The 65-year-old East Rutherford driver “was making a right turn on a green signal from Meadow Road onto Route 17 South and struck the pedestrian, who was attempting to cross over Route 17 towards his place of employment,” Feliciano said.

The 1999 Fort F-150 “sustained damage to the headlight and was driven away from the scene by the driver,” the captain said.

The southbound highway was closed about an hour.
