Officer Ryan Burke stopped a Ford Explorer with Maryland registration for erratic driving Saturday afternoon on Essex Street off southbound Route 17, Detective Sgt. James DePreta said this afternoon.
Burke “spoke with both the driver and passenger and found their accounts of where they were heading extremely different,” DePreta said.
After obtaining the driver’s consent, Burke found four Connecticut drivers’ licenses and one Pennsylvannia license during a search.
All bore the photo of passenger Stanley Delacruz, 25, but “the names and addresses were different on each,” the sergeant said.
Delacruz was also carrying five credit cards with names matching the licenses, he said.
Questioned by detectives at headquarters, Delacruz “acknowledged that he intended to use the licenses to acquire cellphone upgrades on unsuspecting victims’ accounts,” DePreta said. “The corresponding credit card was used as a second form of identification.”
Investigators were contacting those whose identities were used while also checking into the driver’s possible involvement.
Delacruz, meanwhile, was being held on $27,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with attempted identity theft, possession of incomplete credit cards and trafficking of personal identifying information.
