Julio Ponce, 31, of Clifton, remained at large this morning. Police are asking that anyone who sees him either dial 911 or call Rochelle Park police: (201) 843-1515
It began late yesterday morning when a St. Ann Place resident in the south end of town called police and said a suspicious-looking man rang his doorbell, asking for someone who didn’t live there. The resident said he then drove off in a blue or black Infiniti.
“Being aggressive,” Detectives Jim Depreta and Chris Bermudez drove around the north end of town, looking for the car, Police Chief Robert Flannelly told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
They spotted one about a half-mile away, with a man sitting inside, on Colling Avenue.
When the occupant saw Depreta and Bermudez looking at him, the chief said, he got out and made a call on his cellphone, then started walking away. “A check of the plate revealed the car wasn’t from the area,” Flannelly added.
Suspecting he was a lookout, the detectives grabbed the man, who at first gave them a bogus name and reason for being there, the chief said.
However, Depreta and Bermudez identified him as 27-year-old Guillermo Peraltanoesi of Paterson, an ex-con wanted on gun and drug charges.
Peraltanoesi had a laptop and a Sony DVD player reported stolen from the Korean Presbyterian Church on Becker Avenue about 40 minutes earlier, the chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
At the same time, uniformed officers searched area backyards: Moments later, Officer John Cassidy found a rear door kicked in and a home burglarized just up the street, Flannelly said.
“This is just another example of outstanding police work,” Flannelly told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “It is my belief that if these men weren’t detected, they would have victimized many more of our residents.”
It isn’t over, though. A search was underway for Ponce, who is charged in warrant with the same counts as Peraltanoesi.
Meanwhile, Flannelly said, his officers – both in uniform and plainclothes — will continue to be aggressive.
“They are out on the street checking out suspicious subjects and showing a uniformed presents to deter crime,” the chief said. “They are truly a credit to the uniform they wear.”
