Ridgewood man accused of stealing from breast cancer jar arrested again after crash

YOU SAW IT HERE FIRST: A repeat offender already facing charges of stealing hundreds of dollars from a breast-cancer donation jar was arrested again after his car slammed head-on into a tree and Ridgewood police said they found drugs inside.

Police this morning said that they found synthetic marijuana, heroin and hypodermic needles in the white Nissan driven by 25-year-old Nicholas Demetro following Sunday night’s crash.

The car “crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and left the roadway, striking a tree” on Fairfield Avenue just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Ridgewood Detective Chris McDowell said.

Demetro was taken to Hackensack Medical Center by the Ridgewood Ambulance Corps and was later charged, following an investigation, with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, McDowell said.

He also was issued several summonses, including for having drugs in a motor vehicle, failing to maintain lane, failing to keep right, improper display of license plates and having unsafe tires, the detective said.

Demetro was released pending an appearance in Ridgewood Municipal Court.

This follows his arrest in July on charges of taking $400 from a breast cancer donation jar at a Wood-Ridge pizzeria a month earlier (SEE: Wood-Ridge police charge Ridgewood man with stealing $400 breast cancer donations).

Demetro also is facing an indictment on charges of assault and eluding police stemming from an incident in Ridgewood in June, as well as charges out of Hasbrouck Heights and Westwood, records indicate.

He’d been free on $4,000 bail after being released from the Bergen County Jail on Aug. 15 when Sunday’s crash occurred, records show.
