Police at the scene said that they suspect the cyclist — who was wearing a helmet — may have been riding too close to the curb and simply lost control.
However, they said they can’t rule out that he might have been struck by a passing vehicle.
Passersby comforted the victim until emergency personnel arrived. Responding were Ridgewood police, firefighters and EMS workers, as well as a paramedic unit from The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.
He was taken by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center, where detectives were expected to interview him.
