Public pays for free drugs, dental for ex-mayor’s ex, prosecutor says

For nearly eight years, authorities say, former Carlstadt Mayor William Roseman’s wife bought prescription drugs on taxpayers’ dime — even though the couple was divorced. Only in New Jersey, right? Now, a grand jury has added charges that Roseman kept his ex-wife on the borough dental plan, as well.

Grand jurors reviewing the case in Hackensack have handed up what’s known as a “superceding indictment,“ adding the new charges, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said today.

All told, Roseman and Lori Lewin are charged with four counts of theft and two counts of official misconduct.

Even though they were divorced in July 2000, Roseman didn’t make the proper 60-day notice to the borough benefits administrator, Molinelli said.

As a result, he said, taxpayers paid for $4,000 worth of dental work for Lewin and $7,000 worth of prescriptions through January 2008.

Of course, the insurers had records of everything, the prosecutor said.

“For the medical benefits, Carlstadt paid for the services to Lewin,” he said. “For the dental benefits, Delta Dental, the company Carlstadt was paying premiums for Lewin’s coverage.”

As mayor, Roseman “presided over Council meetings where funding for the Borough’s medical, prescription and dental plans was approved, while at the same time, Lori Lewin was allowed to remain on the benefits plans,” Molinelli said.

Roseman and Lewin will be back in court within a month to have the new charges read to them. The most serious offense, official misconduct, carries a maximum of 10 years for those convicted.
