CLIFFVIEW PILOT reported on the March 12 head-on crash on eastbound Route 46 near Henry Street, in which a trio of Garfield firefighters pulled the woman from a 1970 Mercury Cougar driven by 25-year-old Harry Halvorsen, III.

Both he and the wrong-way driver, Stephen Baker, also 25, of Newark, were charged with assault by auto and being involved in a serious crash while suspended. Baker was held on $10,000 bail, while Halvorsen was released on summonses.

An investigation led to Halverson’s arrest on aggravated sexual assault charges Tuesday by Molinelli’s detectives and Elmwood Park police.

“During the course of the investigation, it was determined that prior to the collision, Halvorsen had engaged in sexual activity [in Saddle Brook] with the victim, whom he knew or should have known was physically helpless or mentally incapacitated,” Molinelli said.

Halverson, who the prosecutor said is single and unemployed, was being held on $300,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail. A May 2 first appearance was scheduled in Central Municipal Court in Hackensack.
