Alon Levin, 52, of Hillsdale used diagnostic tools at his HQ Custom Design shop at 275 Huyler Street -- which specializes in commercial and luxury custom conversions -- to access and tamper with the vehicles' computers, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.
"Odometer rollback schemes primarily target high mileage vehicles," Grewal said. "A rollback of just a few thousand miles can greatly affect a vehicle’s resale value or change the turn-in costs on a lease.
"Insurance premiums are based on several factors, one of which is the vehicle’s mileage," the prosecutor added. "A vehicle’s owner depends on an accurate mileage reading for critical maintenance scheduling."
Levin was released on a summons pending a Central Municipal Court appearance this coming Tuesday on computer-related theft charges.
