Propane heater ignites new Garfield townhouse blaze

A propane heater apparently ignited a pre-dawn blaze that destroyed several new Garfield townhouses.

Firefighters had it under control is less than two hours.

The 14 three-story units were still under construction and not occupied.

Eight units were destroyed and a ninth severely damaged, fire officials said. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes.

No injuries were reported.

Joining Garfield firefighters were their counterparts from Elmwood Park, Maywood, Saddle Brook and Wallington.

Teaneck firefighters brought a food supply truck.
