Police take pay cuts to save colleagues’ jobs

Police in Rochelle Park have kept two brother officers from losing their jobs by agreeing to take a temporary pay cut and to cap overtime. Is it an ominous sign of things to come elsewhere?

In such wildly different towns as Norwood, Garfield, and Hawthorne, layoffs appear inevitable. Harrington Park already is pink-slipping officers.

In Rochelle Park, both patrol and supervisors signed off on the 1.5 percent base-pay decrease through the end of the year. The 20 officers also agreed to comp time when they work extra hours once overtime expenses hit $85,000.

Layoffs would have kept any tax increase under the state-mandate 4 percent cap.

It will be interesting to see what the municipality gives back now that negotiations are beginning on a new police contract.
