Officer Nick Mercoun spotted the silver Honda with several equipment violations traveling on Rochelle Avenue around 11 a.m. Monday, Detective Sgt. James DePreta said.

Spotting Mercoun, the driver "abruptly pulled onto a side street and parked," he said.

After the officer's car passed, she drove off toward Essex Street, where he stopped her, the sergeant said.

Mercoun smelled unburnt marijuana, then found 26 plastic baggies of it -- packaged for sale -- during a search, he said.

He arrested the driver, 26-year-old Jasmine Green of Newark, on several drug charges, including possession with the intent to distribute.

Green was released pending a hearing in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
