Police say New Milford goose hunter was armed with knives, crossbows

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: New Milford police said they found a Maywood man believed to be hunting geese with a crossbow in a residential area carrying an arsenal that included several knives, two mini-crossbows and five dozen 6-inch arrows.

Called by a concerned resident, Lt. John O’Malley and Patrol Officers John Moroney and Kevin VanSaders found 49-year-old John Hall carrying a yellow duffel bag filled with weapons and a 10-inch knife tucked into his waistband, , Chief Frank Papapietro said Monday afternoon.

Hall also smelled of alcohol, he said.

In his front pocket was a 4-inch switchblade knife and in his boot another knife of the same size, Papapietro said.

Hall at first “claimed he was target practicing by Hardcastle Pond but later stated he used the weapons for protection,” the chief said.

No injured or dead animals were found in the area, he added.

Hall posted 10 percent of his $20,000 bail and was released pending a Municipal Court date on several charges of weapons possession and disorderly conduct.

Papapietro said his officers seized the weapons and have notified the  Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Animal Cruelty Unit.
