Audrey Johnson, 28, was wearing a black Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt when surveillance cameras captured her taking the keys from next to the victim’s register and sticking them in her pocket — moments after after scanning her discount card at the West Passaic Street supermarket, Detective Jim DePreta told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

She was wearing the same sweatshirt when he and Detective Chris Bermudez went to her home yesterday after tracing the card, DePreta said.

It was the second time in a week that police found and charged a suspect with a crime at the store by tracing a “Price Plus” card, he said.

After going into the cashier’s car and rifling through her purse, Johnson returned to keys to the store’s customer service counter, DePreta said.

The cashier later discovered her driver’s license, bank card, credit card, gift card, cash, a makeup purse and loose change stolen, he said.

At headquarters, Johnson admitted stealing the keys, returning to the supermarket later in the day and searching the parking lot for the victim’s vehicle, the detective told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. Once she found it, she said, she took everything she could of value before returning the keys.

She then tried  using the gift and bank cards at a Paramus A.C. Moore store, but the bank card was already reported stolen, DePreta said.

Johnson was released pending a Municipal Court appearance on charges of burglary and theft.
