Law enforcement officers from North Jersey aim to make a strong showing in the weekend-long, 6-on-6 flag-football tournament:
Besides the Hackensack local, there’s East Rutherford PBA Local 155 (below), Little Ferry PBA Local 102, Elmwood Park PBA Local 185, Mahwah PBA Local 143 and a group of detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office who call themselves Bergen Blue.
Also participating: North Bergen police, Local 197 of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office, Sussex County Corrections Officers Local 378, NJ Parole Officers PBA 326, New Jersey Transit police, locals from Garfield, Clifton and Wayne, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Superior Officers Association.
“We met some new friends and had a great time competing,” Hermann said. “To a man, we all agree that this was one of the most satisfying moments we have experienced in our careers.”
Since its inception six years ago, the Snow Bowl has raised more than $500,000 for Special Olympics New Jersey, helping more than 22,000 athletes who train and compete free-of-charge, year-round in 24 Olympic–type sports.
This year, though, the participants could raise nearly as much in a single weekend.
With perfect football weather going into today’s round, the fundraising leaders are a squad out of Cranford called Shark’s Finns, with $18,793 raised.
Neck-and-neck in second were a team run by well-known New Jersey fitness trainer Darren DiGiacomo of Summit: HealthyBodiesNJ.com — which so far has raised $13,445 of its $15,000 goal — and Spencer Blue Diamonds, made up of employees at Garfield’s Spencer Savings Bank, with $13,315.
It’s part of a total that, as of 9:30 this morning, reached $310,645.
Hosted by Special Olympics New Jersey and the New York Football Giants, the light-blocking tournament features play by police, firefighters and other public servants and private groups on a field that’s 40 yards long and 20 yards wide.
