The robber “produced a black handgun and demanded all the money” just after closing at 10:30 p.m., Detective Capt. Daniel Hippe said this morning.

He then “fired one shot at the attendant, striking him in the abdomen before making off with several hundred dollars in cash. The suspect was last seen entering a vehicle which was parked on Main Street adjacent to the scene of the crime,” Hippe said.

He described the robber as about 25, black with medium skin and wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and light pants.

The borough volunteer ambulance squad, which shares a fence with the service station, was there almost immediately after hearing shots, sources said.

The 52-year-old attendant, a borough resident, was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery.

His condition wasn’t available this morning.

Anyone with information that could help authorities in the case is asked to call Ridgefield Park police: (201) 641-6400.
