Already serving time for robbery at East Jersey State Prison in Rahway, the 37-year-old Orsini won’t be eligible for parole for another 10 years at the earliest. That’ll be followed by five years of intensive supervision, under Presiding Superior Court Judge Liliana DeAvila-Silebi’s sentence.
Defense attorney Adolph Gallucio sought leniency, saying the 2010 robberies — a week apart in Maywood and Rochelle Park — occurred at “a time in [Orsini’s] life when he was heavily involved in drugs.”
Although DeAvila-Silebi said she was willing to bend a bit — allowing the sentence to run at the same time as Orsini’s current term — she added four years onto a plea-bargained 12-year term.
If convicted at trial, the judge explained, Orsini could have remained behind bars for life, following five convictions in three counties and a rap sheet that records show stretches back nearly 13 years.
“You continue to do the same type of crime over and over again,” DeAvila-Silebi told Orsini. “So obviously, you’re not deterred.”
Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Deepa Jacobs told the judge that Orsini “has had several opportunities to change his life, to get back on track, and instead he chose to harm innocent civilians. He has made the same plea before, and then within a week or two, committed two very violent armed robberies.”
DeAvila-Silebi sentenced Orsini to 16 years, of which he must serve 85 percent (13½). He began serving a 6-year sentence for two other robberies in 2010.
“You are going to be under intensive parole supervision [for] an additional five years when you get out that effectively extends your sentence,” she told Orsini.
“Do you know what will happen if you come before me again?” the judge asked him.
“Back in,” Orsini replied.
