“It’s been worse,” a local resident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT, while walking along the NJ Transit track abuttment behind the New Milford DPW yard in Sunday’s brilliant early afternoon sunshine.

Earlier, a steady stream from the overflowed Hackensack River poured over the Elm Street bridge, which has been closed for repair.

Water continued to pour for hours over the sidewalk along Elm Avenue, as a NJ Transit slowly made its way south. A similar bus had just been towed up New Milford Avenue to Kinderkamack Road.

Other tow trucks and cranes remained parked just off New Milford Avenue, which remained closed to through traffic.

The floodwater’s width stretched a good 100 yards from Elm Street to Madison Avenue, cutting off the direct route between Oradell and New Milford and completely flooding the area around the waterworks, the recycling plant.
