No need to duck, geese: Gassing gets the ax

We all know something needs to be done, but watching workers haul Hefty bags full of gassed geese from Bergen County’s parks was enough to get people’s dander up.

Following a demonstration Saturday, several of them came to Wednesday night’s freeholder meeting in Hackensack, where the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders put an end to the practice of exterminating the pests with poisonous gas.

“It’ll never happen again,” Freeholder Chairman James Carroll promised them, adding that some geese where shot as well as gassed.

What’s amazing is that in New Jersey — the home-rule state — every municipality, every county grapples annually with the problem, the comes up with using dogs or oiling eggs to they don’t hatch. Yet NONE of them gather together to address the problem en masse.

Maybe gassing them will be the final straw. Maybe the governor’s office will take a gander. Or some towns will just cut the goose spit and huddle up on their own.
