Jacob Cintron, 31, of Lodi had just exited Route 80 East at 62B when he lost control of his Hyundai and it struck the New York men, killing both, in October 2012.
During a status hearing in Hackensack yesterday, Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Martin Delaney told Presiding Superior Court Judge Liliana DeAvila-Silebi that he believes the charges can be resolved without a trial — but not yet.
Silebi, in turn, told both sides to return to court Nov. 13 with a decision on a plea agreement. Otherwise, she will scheduled a trial.
Cintron is charged with two second-degree counts of driving recklessly, causing the deaths.
Wilfredo Pena, 43, of the Bronx and Segunda Fernandez-Urena, 29, of Bayshore, L.I., had pulled over to change a tire, leaving their female passengers in the car.
They had finished the work on a striped area of the roadway and were putting tools in the truck when Cintron’s car struck them.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Cintron has remained free on $125,000 bail, posted 12 days after the incident.
