Promoted were new Capts. James Prise, Francesco Aquila and Patrick Coffey.
Prise, who has 22 years with the department and is now its officer in charge, and Acquila, an 18-year veteran, were formally presented to the public at Tuesday night's Mayor and Council meeting.
Coffey, who has 17 years with the department, had a previous commitment.
"This restructuring of the ranks puts the new captains in leadership positions to give them experience in those roles in advance of the day when the city once again hires a police chief," Police Director Michael Mordaga told Daily Voice. "We've never had a layout like this before."
Acquila becomes the officer in charge of uniformed services and Coffey the officer in charge of investigative services.
The department has had various officers in charge since former Chief Ken Zisa was convicted in 2012 of insurance fraud and official misconduct. An appeals court last year overturned the verdict.
