Both the victim and assailant rented basement apartments

The bald victim, in his late 30s, was hospitalized after being slashed across the top of his head, from the inside of his wrist to his elbow, and across his stomach.

Neighbors at the Fairview Avenue complex, steps from the Nungessers junction, said they heard a commotion around 6:30.

Superintendent Tom Iafelice told CLIFFVIEWPILOT.COM the victim said: “He kicked down my door and began stabbing me.” Iafelice immediately called police.

“I’d never seen anything like it,” the 52-year-old superintendent said.

Fairview Police Chief John Pinzone would only confirm that an arrest was made, pending official release of information.

Iafelice said he knew something “wasn’t right” about the assailant after he removed the light fixtures in the hallway of his basement apartment. “He told me they were talking to him,” the super told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“Looks like it was done with a boxcutter, like he was sliced in straight lines instead of cut,” said Iafelice, a North Bergen native who graduated NBHS in 1975. “I couldn’t even recognize him.”

“The sight of all that blood made me sick to my stomach,” he told CVP.

Police haven’t said whether they’ve caught the assailant, who ran into the basement before they arrived.

The victim, Iafelice told CLIFFVIEW PILOT, “is probably one of the nicest tenants here. The guy works two jobs. You hardly ever see him. He just bought himself a new car.”
