From the start, “the motorists’ injuries were not believed to be life-threatening,” Hillsdale Police Chief Chip Stalter said.

No apparent external injuries were reported — a good sign, authorities said.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the wet road and “any driver inattention” played a role in the crash, in which a southbound car driven by an 18-year-old Harrington Park crossed the center line and smashed into a sedan driven by a 58-year-old New Milford woman.

Responding to Sunday’s 10:38 a.m. collision near Dwight Avenue were Hillsdale Officers Brian McKeever and Jeff Angermeyer, as well as local firefighters and paramedics from Hackensack University Medical Center and the Washington Township Ambulance Corps.

The New Milford woman suffered chest pains and was also being evaluated for possible internal injuries, police said.

According to a release from Chief Stalter:

“Preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident revealed that the Harrington Park woman, who was traveling southbound, drifted into the northbound lane of Kinderkamack Road while rounding the bend in the roadway.

“Further investigation will be necessary to determine factors that may have contributed to this accident.

“No criminality has been detected and neither driver was under the influence of any liquor or drugs that could have impaired their ability to operate their automobiles.

“The focus of this investigation remains on the wet pavement and any driver inattention that could have contributed to the collision.”
