ONLY ON CVP: Haworth building officials allowed a family to remain in their home after a mini-van driven by a drunken Rockland County man plowed into a corner of the house last night, compromising the foundation, authorities said.

James Rainford, 46, of Orangeburg, NY was headed north on Schraalenburgh Road when he either passed out or lost control of the 2005 Dodge at Haworth Avenue around 11:10 p.m., Lt. Thomas Ryan told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

It careened through the bushes and rammed the house on the southwest side, he said.

Rainsford had only scratches but was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center because of the severity of the crash, Ryan said.

Sgt. Thomas Smith and Officer Alex Yannuzzi found a small amount of marijuana and other drugs that were sent for testing to the New Jersey State Police laboratory.

They charged Rainsford with DWI, reckless driving, driving without insurance, drug possession and having marijuana in a motor vehicle. Additional charges were expected pending the results of the lab tests, Ryan said.

“The impact took out a corner of the house, but the inspector didn’t consider it a danger,” the lieutenant said, “so the occupants were allowed to remain.”
