Maywood police seek suspect who ran from stop, tried home break-in

Officer Darryl Wuhrl pulled the vehicle over near Prospect Avenue just before 1 a.m., Maywood Police Chief David Pegg told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Wuhrl received consent to search the car from the driver, Nicholas Garcia of North Bergen, the chief said. But his passenger, while being frisked, suddenly pushed Wuhrl and ran, he said.

Several neighboring towns rushed to help — among them, Paramus, Lodi and the Bergen County Police Department’s K9 unit.

“While the dog was working the scene, a resident from Prospect Avenue called the police desk and advised that someone had attempted to break into the basement of her home,” Pegg said.

The officers and canine quickly went there, “but it appeared the homeowner had waited 30 minutes to call and the [target] had fled this scene, too,” the chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The license plates on the vehicle were from a car reported stolen out of Hoboken, he said.

Garcia was charged with drug offenses, failing to surrunder drugs and receiving stolen property. He also received nine (9) motor vehicle summonses.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification processed the car for evidence. Maywood police have some good information on the passenger and are hoping he either turns himself in or is spotted.
