Maywood police arrest alleged pot thief, ‘victim’ who reported her

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Demarest woman who served a little more than three months in the county jail for violating probation on a crack-related crash that sent two people to the hospital was arrested by Maywood police on charges of stealing pot from a 60-year-old resident — who, in turn, was charged with drug possession.

Salvatore Odovardi, who has a criminal history of his own, reported to police last month that 27-year-old Nicole Italiano broke into his Demarest Place apartment and swiped pot and drug paraphernalia from him, Detective Jason Liaban said this afternoon.

Italiano was taken into custody and released on a summons to appear in Municipal Court to answer charges of burglary, theft, evidence tampering and possession of crack, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Liaban said.

Odovardi, who turns 61 this coming Monday, was released on charges of marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession, the detective said.

Italiano — who violated probation before when she was arrested on a knife-possession offense in 2007 — was involved in a three-car crash on Kinderkamack Road in Westwood on Jan. 10, 2012 that put her back behind bars for vehicular assault.

Witnesses told police Italiano’s car was speeding north on busy Kinderkamack when it veered into the southbound lane to pass another car and hit a borough vehicle.

Her car barrelled onto the opposite curb, downing street signs and hitting retaining walls before crossing several lawns, Police Chief Frank Regino told CLIFFVIEW PILOT at the time.

That’s when it hit the third car, whose driver had pulled off the road in an effort to avoid a crash, the chief said.

Officers found Italiano under the influence and carrying a crack pipe, he said.

A grand jury in Hackensack returned an indictment against Italianio on Feb. 29, 2012 for 4th-degree assault by auto.

A judge in Hackensack sentenced Italiano to probation, with specific conditions, after she pleaded guilty to assault by auto.

She then violated several of those conditions, records show, including:

not reporting to her probation officer;
failing mandatory drug screenings;
failing to attend counseling;
paying only $150 of a $4,024.90 fine.

The judge then ordered Italiano in May 2013 to serve 364 days in the Bergen County Jail.

She was released three months and nine days later, records show.
