Maywood officer among those who rode in Police Unity Tour

SHOUT OUT: As one of dozens of law enforcement officers from the area who participated in the Police Unity Tour — bicycling to Washington, D.C. from New Jersey — Maywood Police Officer Walter Moussou raised $2,345 of more than $1.72 million collected for the expansion, maintenance and preservation of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

The ride was part of National Police Week, during which a variety of special events were held, including a candelight vigil that drew tents of thousands to the memorial to dedicate the addition names of 321 fallen law enforcement heroes to the memorial.

Of those added, 120 were officers killed in the line of duty during 2012, while 201 were officers previously undiscovered.

More than 1,700 members of the Police Unity Tour were among those attending the 25th Annual Candlelight Vigil.

The unity tour participants came from various points around the globe, leaving from six “spokes” along the East Coast — including East Hanover, NJ.

As always, loved ones of those who died in the line duty and others cheered on the cyclists as they made their way into the memorial, some accompanied by motorcycle escorts — always a highlight of National Police Week.
