Police and firefighters responded to Windsor Court at 5:30 a.m. today after someone using an accelerant set a homemade door mat hanging on a railing on fire, Police Chief David Pegg said this afternoon.

Evidence was collected by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification after a search by members of the sheriff’s and Bergen County Police Department K9 units.

Authorities are exploring similarities to a pair of almost-simultaneous garage fires on March 2 that they said were also deliberately set at the same time of day.

One was at the same Windsor Court complex as this morning’s fire.

In that one, the garage is below the building, which created “the possibility of injury and/or death,” Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said at the time.

The fire destroyed one vehicle and damaged others, the prosecutor said.

The other was in a detached garage of an apartment complex on Hammell Place, causing explosions from several containers being kept there.

Molinelli asked that anyone with information about the arsons call his office’s anonymous TIPS line at (201) 226-5532 or the Maywood Police Department at (201) 845-8800.
