Thanks to the resident’s call, police converged on Essex Street, where the thief had cut a hole in the fence, Detective Richard Brown said this afternoon.

Officers Darryl Wuhrl, Matthew Parodi and and Erik Aronson established a perimeter and requested mutual aid from their colleagues in Hackensack, Lodi and Rochelle Park. A Bergen County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit also responded.

Moments later, Aronson spotted 50-year-old Richard F. Mierzejwski pushing the shopping cart full of hand tools to a nearby apartment.

Mierzjwski was taken into custody with the help of Hackensack police following a brief struggle, Brown said.

Coincidentally, the Bergen County Sheriff’s K-9 unit tracked Mierzejwski from the crime scene directly to the same apartment where the officers found him.

Mierzejwski who has an extensive criminal record that dates back to 2007, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstruction, burglary, theft, criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools and disorderly conduct. Bail information wasn’t yet available this afternoon.
