James Taylor, 58, was killed in the fire, which Molinelli said was ruled accidental.
His mother, Frances Taylor, was taken to Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck.
Molinelli said what was found in the basement apparently didn’t contribute to the blaze, which broke out on Luke Avenue around 7:40 this morning and was under control in just under 90 minutes.
Investigators from the prosecutor’s office and the county Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence.
A firefighter also was briefly hospitalized for heat exhaustion, emergency workers said.
The fast-moving blaze broke firefighters from Bergenfield, Bogota, Cresskill Demarest, Dumont, Englewood, Hackensack, Haworth, New Milford, Oradell, Ridgefield Park, Teaneck to assist or provide backup coverage for the borough, Bergenfield Police Capt. Cathy Madalone said tonight.
The Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps was there within minutes and quickly took Mrs. Taylor to the hospital, emergency workers told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
James Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene, they said.
The Bergen County Bomb squad removed the materials from the basement, Madalone said.
