Man, 20, charged with throwing bricks through windows of home, cars, injuring woman

UPDATE: A 20-year-old man who was initially released for lack of evidence was charged with throwing bricks through the windows of more than a dozen cars and homes — including one that sent an 18-year-old woman to the hospital — after a State Police lab linked him to the crimes, authorities said.

Timothy Hamlett, a former Don Bosco Prep track star, was carrying a backpack with small, red brick-like particles on it when Officer Lamon Meeks stopped him on his bicycle based on witnesses’ reports, Police Chief Robert Carney said this morning.

Although Hamlett was released, the backpack was sent to the New Jersey State Police Laboratory.

The results came back three weeks ago, and on Sept. 4 detectives obtained an arrest warrant, Carney said.

Hamlet — who recently attended the University of Pennsylvania — turned himself in yesterday, the chief said. A Municipal Court judge granted him the opportunity to pay 10% of his $20,000 and Hamlett was released.

He is charged with aggravated assault and criminal mischief, Carney said. Additional charges may follow once a grand jury in Hackensack reviews the case, he said.

The vandalism spree occurred during the overnight hours of May 26 – May 27, beginning when a car on Helen Street was damaged around 9:50 p.m.

Nine vehicles and four houses in all were struck, Carney said.

In one instance, an 18-year-old Claremont Avenue woman lying on a couch was hit in the face by a brick hurled through her window.

“She sustained a cut over her left eye, either from the brick or shattered glass,” Lt. Andrew McGurr said at the time.

She was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

Barely 10 minutes after she was injured, a brick came flying through the window of a home on Cumberland Avenue. A car was damaged on Lincoln Place minutes later.

The reports quickly piled up through the night and into the next morning as home and or vehicle windows were also smashed on Lincoln Place, Martense and Sagamore avenues and Wyndham Road.
