Luring incident in Hackensack similar to those in Maywood, Oradell, police say

The vehicles are different, but the descriptions children in Hackensack, Maywood and Oradell have given police of a man who’s approached them on the street are strikingly similar. “We definitely could be looking for the same person,” a detective in one of the towns told CLIFFVIEW PILOT Friday afternoon.

The most recent incident occurred earlier, when an 11-year-old boy told police he was approached by a man driving a Jeep Wrangler near the corner of Union and Sussex Streets around 7:30 a.m.

The boy described him as older, with stubby facial hair and wearing sunglasses and said he asked whether he knew where the area Costco was, Detective Capt. Thomas Salcedo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The youngster said he told the driver he didn’t know, and that the men then demanded he get into the SUV.

The boy said he kept walking and the man drove off.

Salcedo said his investigators are comparing notes with their counterparts in Oradell and Maywood, where similar incidents were reported.

And although the vehicles differed, “the descriptions given of the suspect are nearly identical,” he told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Earlier this year, police said a mechanic in his 20s drove different vehicles while trying to lure youngsters in Tenafly, Cresskill and Dumont. SEE: Arrest made in Tenafly, Cresskill, Dumont luring incidents

Oradell police sent a letter to local schools urging parents to warn their children to avoid strangers and get out of harm’s way if any approach them.
