As a result, Basil Trotman will be sentenced to three to four years in state prison next month after pleading guilty yesterday to stalking and making terroristic threats.
Trotman said in court that he and the woman had been dating for several years when things went south and she obtained a restraining order in 2009.
However, he said, she then told him “it was okay” for him to contact her, so he set about trying to persuade her to return to him. It culminated in the Sept. 14, 2012 visit.
“You had some difficult conversations with this woman,” Trotman’s attorney, public defender Gail Hargrove, asked him in court.
He said he did.
“You contacted her on September 14, when there was a restraining order in place. We call that stalking,” Hargrove added. “Do you know what that is?”
Trotman said he did.
“Did you write a letter and tell her: ‘I will have you back if I have to kill you?’” the public defender asked her client.
Trotman admitted that he had.
He said he also continued to do things to cause the woman fear and alarm because he wanted her to return to a romantic relationship with him.
In exchange for guilty pleas to two charges of an indictment returned against Trotman by a Bergen County grand jury, prosecutors are dropping six other counts.
Presiding Superior Court Judge Liliana DeAvila-Silebi set a March 22 sentencing date.
Trotman, meanwhile, remains held on $50,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.
