Joseph Bariso, 28, was being held on $2 million bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with attempted murder, illegal weapons possession and hindering apprehension.
Olga Bariso remained in critical condition at Hackensack University Medical Center today after being shot several times in her Union Street home around 6 a.m. yesterday.
A bulletin was issued soon after for her grandson, who Molinelli said was found by Rutherford police walking along Rutherford Avenue around 1:15 p.m.
Detectives charged the 5-foot-9-inch, 140-pound bearded Bariso after a long day of interviewing him and collecting evidence. He has a court appearance scheduled tomorrow morning in Hackensack.
The gun, which the prosecutor said Bariso found in the house, hadn’t yet been recovered as of early this afternoon.
CLIFFVIEW PILOT reported last night that a relative of Olga Bariso’s was in the custody of Molinelli’s detectives at their Paramus office yesterday afternoon. He was formally charged after midnight after his fingerprints had been taken, a law enforcement source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Joseph Bariso lives in a basement apartment of the house at 141 Union Street, two doors down from St. Francis de Sales Church and cemetery, which is owned by his grandmother and grandfather, Joseph.
One of the Barisos’s two sons, Charles, also lives there, a family friend told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Their other son got a call from Charles early this morning telling him that their mother had been shot but was conscious when taken to the hospital, the friend said.
911 calls were received at 6:21 a.m., Molinelli said.
The Bergen County Sheriff’s K9 unit searched the area while the office’s Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence.
The Bergen County Police Department blocked off the area at Prospect and Woodside avenues.
Molinelli thanked all of teh agencies, including the Lodi and Rutherford police, for their participation.
