A shackled Joseph Bariso, 28, said nothing other than “yes” when Superior Court Judge Edward Jerejian asked him whether he understood the charges.
Jerejian then entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Bariso, who doesn’t yet have an attorney, and continued his bail on $2 million on charges of attempted murder, illegal weapons possession and hindering apprehension.

Olga Bariso remained in critical condition at Hackensack University Medical Center today after being shot several times in her Union Street home around 6 a.m. Sunday.
A bulletin was issued soon after for her grandson, who Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said was found by Rutherford police walking along Rutherford Avenue around 1:15 p.m. Sunday.
Detectives charged the 5-foot-9-inch, 140-pound bearded Bariso after a long day of interviewing him and collecting evidence.
Molinelli said Bariso found the gun in the house and then ditched it afterward.
Joseph Bariso lives in a basement apartment of the house at 141 Union Street owned by his grandmother and grandfather, Joseph, two doors down from St. Francis de Sales Church and cemetery.
One of the Barisos’s two sons, Charles, also lives there, a family friend told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Their other son got a call from Charles early Sunday morning telling him that their mother had been shot but was conscious when taken to the hospital, the friend said.
