Once again, an alert resident summoned police, who took 21-year-old Matthew Timothy Jolls into custody as he tried entering a 2011 BMW parked in the lot of the Saddle Brook VFW on Market Street around midnight today, Police Chief Robert Kugler told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The resident reported seeing Jolls entering a 2014 Toyota Carolla on Harrison Avenue, Kugler said.

The would-be burglar fled when the Toyota’s alarm was activated, he said.

Within minutes, Officer Christopher Verost spotted Jolls, the chief said.

He ran but Verost quickly caught him, Kugler said. Jolls was carrying a large amount of change, he said.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 181-pound Jolls “appeared to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and was placed into Hackensack University Medical Center for medical care and further observations,” Kugler said.

He was then transferred to the Bergen County Jail, where he was being held on $2,500 bail, charged with two counts of burglary to vehicles and obstruction.

Saddle Brook has had an increase of car burglaries and car thefts within the last month, Kugler noted, adding that those who don’t lock their vehicles and leave valuables in the cabins instead of a locked trunk tempt bandits.

“Always lock your car and always be on the lookout and immediately report suspicious people and behavior,” Kugler said.
